Meeting with Janusz Kamiński, Polish cinematographer and director, two-time Academy Award winner - photo recap

// 2025-10-27

“Technique is essential, but let’s not forget that everything lies in the viewer. You must always remember who your viewer is.” - Janusz Kamiński

Our students had the unique opportunity to meet Janusz Kamiński - Polish cinematographer and director, two-time Academy Award winner (for "Schindler’s List" in 1994 and "Saving Private Ryan" in 1999) - as part of dr hab. Katarzyna Taras’s course "The art of cinematography at WFS".

The meeting revolved around the film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" directed by Julian Schnabel, with cinematography by Kamiński.

Together, we discussed the collaboration between director and cinematographer, explored Kamiński’s artistic journey, and learned how to consciously break cinematic rules and work with the biggest names in the industry - both actors and directors. The conversation was filled with fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from films such as "Schindler’s List", "The Fabelmans", and "West Side Story".

Masters inspire - we listen and draw as much as we can from their wisdom.

A heartfelt thank you to Janusz Kamiński and dr hab. Katarzyna Taras for an unforgettable cinematic lesson. And to our students and guests - for your presence, energy, and for filling the room to the brim!
